I direct your attention to two important dates;Monday,November 16,1998 the Honolulu Star Bulletin ran an article concerning MauI NEED to improve cable TV.(see article)Question:Does MauI really NEED to expand and improve cable TV?Does Haiku and Huelo need to"IMPROVE EQUIPMENT AND EXPAND(TV)services"?The word"EXPAND"immediately caught my attention.It is said,if the people in a given community desire or WANT something by virtue of their willingness to PAY(money)for it,then it must be good for them.That certainly may be true, but please let us not confuse WANT and NEED.We may WANT a thing we feel is good for us,in the short term,but what we NEED in the long term may be compromised by the WANT, the desire,the course of action taken in the short term.Let us look at it this way:First Haiku and Huelo,next Hana and Ulupalakua then HALEAKALA.Choices,we all make choices.In two words then,MAKAALAMAUI!Again on the same date above,an article(see article)regarding Kahoolawe clean up project.First,and foremost of all,kanakamaoli must be the one working on the project,and NOT SOMEBODY ELSE.Since kanakamaoli will(I thought,I think) be the one who will be caring for the aina.Who and what goes onto Kahoolawe,from time immemorial,(people,plants,animals etc.is of extreme importance,in the long term.NANAKUMULIPO.The last date I call your attention to is Saturday,November 7,1998,(see article Star bulletin)"Plans to EXPAND Lihue airport to be presented on KauaI,Oahu"."State officals project a significant increase in visitor arrivals to KauaI between NOW and the year 2020".After reading the article in the sta one can easily see we do not need a PHD or MASTERS degree to determine where the state is going with this one.My take,and comment on the matter:INCREACSED TOURISM FOR KAUAI?AUWENOHOIMAKAALAKAUAI.Pau.Wanola PS:We said this on Oahu more than thirty years ago,and I say it NOW.
