Senator Akaka & Chairman Charles K. Maxwell Sr. to speak
on 1993 apology resolution

Star-Bulletin

U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka will speak on Public Law 103-150 -- more
commonly known as the 1993 apology resolution -- on Nov. 21 at the
University of Hawaii Center for Hawaiian Studies.

Akaka will speak on the joint congressional resolution, as well as give
an update on Hawaiian issues before Congress.

The resolution, signed by President Clinton on Nov. 23, 1993,
apologizes to native Hawaiians on behalf of the United States for the
overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii on Jan. 17, 1893.

It also acknowledges the historical significance of the overthrow and
urges the president to support reconciliation efforts between the U.S.
and native Hawaiians.

The free talk begins at 10 a.m. Registration is at 8 a.m. Also speaking
will be Charles Maxwell, chairman of the Hawaii Advisory Committee to
the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. Maxwell will provide an update of a
report to the commission regarding civil rights for Hawaiians since the
apology resolution was signed.

The Kukahi Coalition is sponsoring the event. Call Clara Kakalia at
262-8741 or Lela Hubbard at 487-2311.
