Aloha Haulani,
If you would take the time and check my main website, there are numerous information that you could fine that would pertain the the subjects you are looking for to complete your school projects. I will try to highlight some of the changes that occurred when Capt. Cook "stumbled on Hawaii. When Capt. Cook arrived and the 40 years that followed his arrival, numerous changes occurred to our culture and customs. First, Capt. Cooks ships and those that followed brought all the deseases of the "modern" world to Hawaii. Our people died by the thousands from the common cold, flu, sexual transmitted deceases. When Cook arrived we had an estimated population of about 600 hundred thousand to 800 hundred thousand people. In 1820 when the first missionaries arrived, they estimated that there were about 200 thousand natives. Over 1/3 of our population had died. The culture and lifestyle and customs had completely been overturned by the foreigns (mostly whites) that disregarded the Hawaiian Law and took total advantage of the Hawaiian peoples lack of understanding of the western ways. When the missionaries came, they made our people into images on themselves and made us use their clothing, and adopt their lifestyle, so then our people was not only sick from deseases, from was broken hearted that they couled not practice their religion and culture as they were converted Christians, living a foreign lifstyle. He kept dying by the thousands. In the 1840s and 50s, some of the missionaries left the minestry along with their children and "coerced" the kings and queens to change the laws so that they could own land. With the use of Americans laws, they "stole half" of the land with foreign laws and when America help the rich Sugar and Pineapple Owners to Overthrow Queen Liliuokalani, over half of Hawaiian land were owned by haole (while people) from America and else where. After our government was stolen, they made us into a State in 1950. Now we as native people are trying to get back lands that are being held in trust for us and regain our Hawaiian Nation. Hopefully in the future we can do that. In 1993 President Clinton signed the Apology Bill(found on my website) which appolgized for the taking of our Kingdom. Hope this helps, Uncle Charlie Haulani
