Ancient symbols?

Aloha Uncle Charlie,
I was wondering if the ancient Hawaiians/Polynesians had a symbol form of communication, before adopting the alphabet from the rock images. If you sound could you show/describe/or guide me to an example of the symbol for water and/or ocean.
