: Aloha Uncle,
: Firstly allow me to thank you for such a wonderful site.
: I am Tahitian/Hawaiian/Chinese/Portugese/Haole. It has been very hard
: for me to obtain information about my ancestors, my roots, my culture.
: I live in Montana. I didn't have the opportunity of growing up in Maui
: as did my mother and her ohana. I know some of my Hawaiian culture but
: would like to learn more. Not too many Hula or luau in Montana.
: You mentioned a sacred ceremony on the volcano. I was wondering if I
: would be welcome-or if I would not be considered Hawaiian enough to
: attend such a ceremony. Wonder too, exactly how much Hawaiian must one be
: to attend these? Are there any programs in Hawaii that are targeted to
: teach adults the language? Id like to learn it. Any ideas
: on who to turn to for more information on Tahitian Geneology? I sure loved
: Maui when I was there last year. It has called to me since I was a child
: and going there as an adult has really made it seem even louder.
: I really miss my aunties there in Maui. It was so hard to board the plane
: I cried while I watched my precious Maui grow smaller in the distance and then
: dissapear. Why don't Hawaiians have the same rights as Native Americans?
: Aren't Hawaiians Native too?? It really confuses me. Sorry I seem to be
: rambling...Thanks for a wonderful, wonderful website
: A hui hou malama pono,
: Gene
Aloha Gene, of course you are welcome. You are Hawaiian no matter where you live. The main thing is that you have the koko (the blood), no matter what percentage you have you are still Hawaiian. Yes the 'Olelo Hawai'i is thought to children and adults. You can find out your Tahitian culture by checking the internet for the sites in Tahiti. People will help you especially if you ask. The reason the Hawaiians are not concidered a Native American because they are not. We are Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiians) and there is no classification for us. They took our land against our will and now they are going to have to deal with us, Kanaka Maoli. Please write anytime and hope that I have helped. Aloha Uncle Charlie
